Performances
Performances were held before temples,
on platforms erected for the purpose, within wooden theatres of richly-sculpted camphor wood, covered with gold leaf. A reflection of temple architecture, the theatre holds its own with dragon-covered columns, title ribbons crammed with creatures, signifying opulence and good luck. Shows lasted four hours divided into two parts : from 3-5:00 p.m. and from 7-9:00 p.m. They always began with a short propitiatory piece, The Meeting of the Three Immortals. (San Xian Hui). |
